Building Awareness Starts With You

Human trafficking is a very intense issue with a lot of detailed information and statistics. But you do not need to be an expert or a federal agent to build awareness for human trafficking.

Step 1: Acknowledgment

You need to first acknowledge that human trafficking exists and the fact it does not only live in third world countries or deeply impoverished areas of America.

Example: The average buyer of trafficked victims are middle aged, middle class to upper middle class males. They don't live in the slums of major cities but in our suburbs and small communities.

Step 2: Research

It doesn't take much to find statistics on human trafficking and once you begin that search, the numbers can take you aback. But numbers aren't permanent. You must also know that these statistics can and will change as it is our mission to fight human trafficking.

Example: 1 in 6 runaways in the United States become human trafficking victims. The average age of minors sex trafficked in the U.S. is 13 years old. 81% of prostitutes are human trafficking victims and there are roughly 24,000 of them estimated to be exploited each day in Chicago.

Step 3: Spread Awareness

Once you are armed with knowledge, you can begin to start the conversation about solutions with those around you. Playing a role in spreading awareness means you become an essential part of ending the war on human trafficking.

Example: Join efforts to expand the reach of this information like the RFTL 5K that is a walk/run dedicated to spreading awareness and raising funds for the fight against human trafficking.
